Young Soccer Team Concludes Season

Varsity soccer concluded its season on Saturday with a 3-1 loss versus Westminster.

Before the match, the program honored four seniors: captain and centerback Douglas Otton, goalkeeper William Walker, midfielder Christian Larkin, and forward Mac Brooks.

The first half ended with a score of 2-0 for the visitors, as the Martlets deposited tallies in the 13th and 30th minutes.

With an altered formation in the second half, ’Wick produced a handful of quality scoring chances. In a span of 10 minutes, sophomore midfielder Wim Nook served two balls toward goal from the left side to junior strikers Ben Matitia and Luke James, both of whom narrowly missed the mark with headers. The momentum was halted in the 60th minute as Westminster finished a cross of its own from the right side.

Nook's efforts would ultimately pay off, as he was on the receiving side of a strike from sophomore Theo Perkins near the penalty stripe and deposited a goal to cap scoring for the day (and the season) in the 89th minute.

Douglas Otton came off the pitch in the 87th minute, ending his impressive three-year varsity tenure to an ovation from the bench and the crowd — only his second time off the field during play all season. The senior captain will represent Brunswick at the WNEPSSA All-Star Game at Suffield Academy on Sunday.

Walker, who made four saves, was relieved in net by his junior predecessor Phil Stabinsky in the 75th minute.

The Bruins end the fall with a record of 5-11-3.
