Soccer Fights to Draw at Hotchkiss

Brunswick earned a positive result under the lights of the Hotchkiss football stadium, drawing the hosts, 1-1, with a last-minute goal on Wednesday evening.

The Bruins defended for most of the first half; Hotchkiss had a talented striker and quality wing player that put constant pressure on ’Wick’s back four with dangerous crosses and through balls. Fortunately, the visitors stayed composed and kept the Bearcats off the board in the first half.

Hotchkiss found the net in the 56th minute — senior GK Will Walker was tasked with making a breakaway save on a 1-v-1 with an attacking striker, but unfortunately left a rebound to be chipped over his head and into the back of the net.

After a slight adjustment in offensive personnel by Coach Simpson, the Bruins began to build through the midfield into the attacking third and generate some chances on goal. In the 85th minute, they converted one of those opportunities. After winning a throw-in down the left sideline, Ollie Leonard ’25 played a ball toward the box and the Hotchkiss GK; Johnny Saunders ’24 found the ball and caused a deflection to trickle across the box toward classmate Tyler Quake, who confidently one-timed it into the back right corner of the net.

Huge accolades are owed to Walker, playing his final few matches as a varsity goalkeeper — he made 12 saves on the day, highlighted by four different close-range breakaway saves and one quick reflex diving save to his right on a cross.

In front of Walker, senior center back and lone captain Douglas Otton had a quality showing, in addition to sophomore midfielders John Buttafuoco and Theo Perkins.

Coming back from long injuries, both Charlie Perkins ’26 and Will Higgs ’24 played impactful minutes for ’Wick in their first real action since September.

The Bruins have two more practices left before their final match against Westminster this Saturday, when the program will honor its four graduating seniors prior to a 2:45 kickoff on Cosby Field.
