Brunswick Wrestling Splits at Avon Duals.

Brunswick travelled back to Avon to compete in the Avon Holiday Duals against a number of teams from around the region. Eight teams were divided into two pools for the first three dual meets. Teams crossed over following their pool matches in order to determine final placings. With two wins and two losses, Brunswick took fourth place of eight.

In the first match of the day, Brunswick faced off against a strong Northfield Mt. Hermon team (who eventually won the overall tournament). Brunswick had little success against a superior and more experienced NMH, which boasted a number of nationally ranked wrestlers, and fell 65-6.

The Bruins rebounded against Philips Exeter Academy, earning a 46-21 victory. Captain Will Donovan (170) set the tone with a 12-4 Major Decision against his opponent. Senior Sammy Guadalupe (182) followed with a 4-2 win. Senior Michael Neviera pinned his opponent in the 220 lbs. bout, while Captain Cliff Belknap earned a hard fought 3-2 victory that went into overtime and was decided by the ultimate tie breaker. Eighth Grader Quinn McGraw took a forfeit at 113, and Carter Bagaria pinned his opponent at 120. Enzo Vera (132) also earned a pin, as did Kyle Pagnani (145). Will MacGillivray (160) closed out the match with a pin as well.

The Bruins were equally successful against Trinity Pawling School, recording a 46-27 win. Tomas Delgado, wrestling up at 195 lbs., pinned his opponent to open Brunswick’s scoring run. Michael Neviera followed with a pin at 220, and Brunswick never relinquished the lead. Quinn McGraw (113) earned an 11-1 major decision, while eighth grader Charlie McGraw took a forfeit at 120. Captain Kyle Karas pinned at 138; Kyle Pagnani took a forfeit at 145; senior Kaden Saad pinned at 152; and Will MacGillivray pinned at 160 to close out the match.

The final match of the day pitted Brunswick against St. Benedict for third place. Unfortunately, the young Bruins were unable to overcome the more seasoned St. Benedict team. Several veteran wrestlers posted victories. Michael Neviera earned an impressive 8-1 decision at 220. Captain Cliff Belknap also earned a 4-0 decision. Captain Will Donovan battled a tough Gray Bee wrestler to earn a 15-9 win. Senior Sammy Guadalupe also scrapped to a 9-3 victory in the final bout of the day. Final score — St. Benedict 57, Brunswick 11.

The Bruins will travel to Iona Prep on Tuesday, and to Choate on Wednesday in the final action of 2021.
