In a nationally televised game on ESPNU, Brunswick outlasted Haverford (Pa.) with two fourth-quarter goals and a last-minute defensive stand to earn a 9-8 victory in the first contest of the GEICO High School Lacrosse Showcase at Malvern Prep (Pa.) on Friday, April 23.
With the win, the Bruins remain undefeated at 7-0.
After falling behind by two early goals from the Fords, ’Wick went on a six-tally run to take a decisive lead early in the second quarter — with two goals from senior co-captain Coulter Mackesy leading the charge.
The Fords didn’t go away and answered to cut the deficit to 7-5 at the half.
The third quarter saw Haverford tie the game at seven with the only two tallies of the frame — and the two teams headed into the final 12 minutes with the game on the line.
It was senior Blake Borges who gave the Bruins the lead back with his third goal of the afternoon, and fellow classmate Luke Waters followed to give ’Wick a 9-7 lead with 5:39 to go.
After Haverford cut it to within one, the Bruins’ defensive unit held the fort to seal the win, as the Fords were unable to get off a quality shot in the waning seconds and junior goaltender Luke Schlank was there to shut the door.
