Trailing 4-3 in the second period to Pope Francis on Wednesday, Brunswick went on a four-goal run to pick-up a win over the Cardinals in Hartong Rink, 7-5. The non-conference victory boosts the Bruins’ overall record to 15-4-2.
The combined 12 goals were the most in a game in Hartong Rink since a baker’s dozen were netted in a 7-6 Brunswick win over Albany Academy back on February 24, 2018.
The Bruins, ranked 10th in the latest USHR.com weekly prep poll, struck first on a 5x3 power-play goal by Jakob Teply. The visitors responded with a pair of goals, including a power-play marker, as the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead with 5:00 remaining in the first period.
Brunswick countered with two goals, including Teply’s team-leading 17th tally, as Teply set-up James Shannon’s goal with 1:13 left in the frame, giving the hosts a 3-2 advantage. Pope Francis answered with the final goal of the first period, lighting the lamp with 23 seconds left.
The Cardinals opened the second period with a tally to take a 4-3 lead with just over 12 minutes to play.
The Bruins responded with their decisive four-goal run, netting three in the second period. Andon Cerbone had a pair of helpers in the scoring burst, as the forward leads the team with 25 assists. Michael Salandra, Shannon and Beanie Richter each added markers during the run in the second period.
Cerbone capped the four-goal scoring burst with a third-period tally, as Brunswick built a 7-4 lead with over eight minutes to play in the contest.
In the last minute of action, Pope Francis deposited a power-play goal for the 7-5 final.
