Brunswick fell to 3-1 overall, following a 20-7 defeat by Choate on Cosby Field in a non-league game on Saturday. For Brunswick, the final five games of the regular season will all be Erickson League contests, as the Bruins are 1-0 in league play.
On the opening drive of the game, Choate converted a short field goal after consuming nearly half of the first quarter with a run-based attack.
Following a three-and-out by the Brunswick offense on the next possession, the Wild Boars were looking to extend their lead. However, as Choate moved deep into Brunswick territory, linebacker Alex Clarke stepped in front of a Wild Boar receiver on a passing play on the Bruins’ five-yard line. Clark made the interception and scampered 95 yards, with some teammates in tow, for a defensive touchdown for the Bruins. Chris Chavez added the extra-point kick to give Brunswick a 7-3 lead with under one minute to play in the first quarter.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Bruins took their 7-3 lead into the intermission.
In the third quarter, the visitors took possession on the Brunswick 20-yard line after a short punt by the Bruins. Choate took advantage of the short field and regained the lead on a one-yard touchdown plunge with 4:35 left.
Trailing 10-7, Brunswick looked to counter the Choate touchdown, marching 58 yards in just five plays, but the Bruins fumbled the ball away on the Wild Boars’ 30-yard line with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter.
Choate opened the fourth quarter with another short field goal to take a 13-7 lead with 9:41 left in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Brunswick’s Jason Agudelo returned the ball 23 yards to the 50-yard line, giving the hosts excellent field position. However, the Bruins could not capitalize and punted the ball to the Wild Boars’ 13 -yard line with just under eight minutes to play in the game.
Choate put the contest out of reach with an 87-yard touchdown drive, as the visitors left Cosby Field with a 20-7 win.
The Bruins open their five-game Erickson League run on the road at Taft on Saturday, October 12.
