Thanksgiving Food Drive: Need 'Greater Than Ever'

Upper School students, faculty, and advisors outdid themselves for this year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive, donating all the holiday fixings to complete more than 400 baskets — along with enough leftovers to fill a trunk.
 
Science teacher Amy Kerekes, in her first year as director of community service, noted the greater need in the local community in the midst of the pandemic. 
 
“I am sure every year these various organizations are so grateful for these donations, but this year, every organization’s numbers skyrocketed. There are so many people in need, right here in our own backyard. 
 
“COVID-19 has affected everyone.”
 
Kerekes spent the day last Friday delivering the baskets to organizations, shelters, and schools in Fairfield and Westchester counties, including 115 to Horizons at Brunswick families; 60 to the Carver Center in Port Chester, N.Y.; 45 to the Waterside School; 40 to Inspirica; 40 to the Peekskill School system; and 30 to Greenwich Boys & Girls Club. 
 
As Family Centers Greenwich could not receive actual food donations, students provided the organization with gift cards to purchase Thanksgiving meals. 
 
Leftover donations were contributed to Neighbor-to-Neighbor.
 
“We’re humbled and proud to be able to be positive advocates and to help members of our surrounding community,” Kerekes said.
