Faculty Honored for ‘Going the Extra Mile’

The “Going the Extra Mile” in Excellence in Teaching Awards, in their inaugural year, have been presented to Jean Dobbs, Anthony Fischetti, and Dana Montanez.

The awards, in the form of a stipend established through the generosity of an anonymous family as part of the “Above All Else” Capital Campaign, will be given annually to a member of the faculty in each division who is viewed by his or her peers, and the award’s Executive Committee, as one who has gone above and beyond standard levels of the profession, exceeding expectations in having a positive impact on students.

Award-winning faculty incent students by offering positive reinforcement and extra help — consistently inspiring and empowering all of those they teach. Award winners’ good example and endeavors, great and small, are recognized as having a powerful and lasting impact on improvement and strengthening of their students’ character and self-esteem.

Jean Dobbs, math specialist in the Pre and Lower Schools, has been a teacher at Brunswick since 1983, defining herself through innovation and commitment to her craft.

Jean is the ultimate collaborator,” Head of Lower School Katie Signer said. “She makes teaching easier for everyone — swooping in with creative ideas, individualizing challenge work for students, meeting with boys who are struggling, modeling lessons in classrooms, and doing all the dirty work, from photocopying to filing.

“And she does it all with a smile,” Signer observed. “Jean never gets ruffled and has a calming presence in the Pre and Lower School divisions.”

Anthony Fischetti, a 16-year veteran of the Brunswick faculty, is a beloved history teacher, advisor, and storyteller — also tirelessly fulfilling his post as class dean of the 8th grade.

“Anthony is a teacher who makes each boy believe his opinion is valuable, a coach who helps his teams understand that team is more important than self, and an advisor who listens and counsels through any challenge,” Head of Middle School Sarah Burdett said.

Upper School award winner Dana Montanez, chair of the science department, arrived on Maher Avenue in 2011, revamping the science curriculum and exuding sincere passion for a subject she loves.

“Dana is a remarkable and inspiring teacher,” Headmaster Tom Philip said. “Passionate about her discipline and deeply committed to her students, she has dramatically enhanced the study of science in all divisions.

“She leads by example and is regularly in her lab long after school hours and on vacations working with groups of students on their science research projects.”

By institutionalizing and devoting financial incentive to encouragement of exceptional dedication and creativity in every teacher, the “Going the Extra Mile” in Excellence in Teaching Awards will help to ensure the increasing excellence of Brunswick’s faculty.

“We’re exceptionally grateful to the donor who endowed the ‘Going the Extra Mile’ Awards,” Philip said. “At Brunswick, ‘going the extra mile’ is a community ethic. For all of us, it’s really inspirational.”
