Football and Soccer Teams Fight to Kick Cancer

Brunswick football and soccer players never have a common foe on the field, but this weekend, they worked together to battle the life-long opponent of cancer.

Students from each team joined forces in a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, donning pink items in their home games on Saturday in support of breast cancer research.

The soccer team wore specially designed game jerseys for its contest against Worcester Academy, while football players added a variety of pink to their uniforms in their game against Westminster.

In addition to the special game day accessories, the teams sold long sleeve shirts, with proceeds going to the cancer-fighting charity. A total of 300 shirts, priced at $25 each, were ordered and sold-out in less than one day. Ten lucky owners of the long sleeve shirts also received a replica of the soccer jersey.

According to Kelly Stewart from the New England Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS), donations and fundraisers like this support research grants across Connecticut, totaling $9.8 million. Additionally, the money raised provides direct service to cancer patients in a number of ACS programs at 30 hospitals and medical centers throughout the state.
