Opening Day 2015–2016: An Open Book

After members of the Class of 2016 walked hand-in-hand with first graders into Dann Gymnasium — a longtime tradition of First Day — Headmaster Thomas W. Philip began Brunswick’s 113th year by addressing the student body.

“While summer is a great time to change the rhythm of our days, to travel, and to spend time with family, one of the highlights for me is looking forward to today — the start of a new school year,” Philip said.

“It’s a fresh start — an open book with so much ahead for all of us.”

School provides a unique and rare opportunity, Philip noted, one quite difficult to find anywhere else along the course of life.

“There are really very few times in life when you have a chance to push the restart button,” Brunswick’s seventh headmaster said. “Not often do you have the chance to begin again, and to make your life whatever you want it to be. You have that chance today.”

Philip encouraged the attentive audience of Lower, Middle, and Upper School students to focus on five guiding principles as they headed off in different directions — to new classrooms, advisories, and grade levels on Brunswick’s three campuses.
  • Decide right now to think of others before yourself. When you wake up each morning, think about how you’re going to try to make someone else’s day better. If you do that, you will continue to make Brunswick the special place it has become and in the process, you’ll like the person you’re becoming as well.
  • Take advantage of all the opportunities with which Brunswick presents you. Don’t just get by. Wear your teachers and coaches out with eagerness to thrive and to learn and to enjoy new experiences.
  • Be willing to make an occasional mistake and be sure to take advantage of that mistake by learning from it. Your character gets stronger when it’s tested. Work through that test by being honest with yourself and others.
  • Appreciate all that we have here.
  • Understand that we’re all part of something special at Brunswick. It’s bigger than any one of us and only works if we’re all in it together. Be responsible for one another and look out for each other.
“If you aren’t moving forward, you’re moving backwards,” Philip concluded. “If you aren’t getting better, you’re getting worse. Make sure your direction is upwards always.”

And, with that, the doors officially opened on another school year — all 966 Brunswick students united in an effort to make it the best ever.
