In Memoriam: Norman A. Pedersen (1927-2015)

Norman A. Pedersen, 88, Brunswick School's fifth Headmaster, died Tuesday, June 9, in Sarasota, Fla.

Mr. Pedersen served as Headmaster from 1969 through 1987, shepherding the School through purchase of the Maple Avenue campus, construction of a new Upper School library/classroom building, and the start of the Upper School coordination program with Greenwich Academy.

Born in Harvey, Ill., Mr. Pedersen attended high school in Elkhart, Ind., and graduated from Princeton University in 1949. He earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Buffalo in 1958. For 15 years, he taught and coached at Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y., before moving to Greenwich to head Brunswick.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Isabel; three children and their spouses, Selina Johnson (Robert), Norman III (Sarah), and Laura Pedersen (Tony Becket); and six grandchildren, Isabella and Robert Johnson, William, Jessica, Katherine, and Brian Pedersen.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at 700 John Ringling Blvd., Plymouth Harbor, Sarasota, Fla. Plans are now under way for a service later in the summer at the family’s summer residence, in Chautauqua, N.Y.
