Horizons at Brunswick, a six-week program designed to help children of limited financial means, kicked off this summer with two classes of 15 boys each — kindergarteners and first graders from New Lebanon, Julian Curtiss, and Hamilton Avenue elementary schools.
Four teachers, two reading specialists, and six Brunswick student classroom assistants led the 30 boys through an inspirational summer of learning.
Here are the highlights:
58 hours of instruction in reading and math — with a 1:4 teacher-student ratio.
Art, instrumental music, technology, Arabic, storytelling, and improvisational exercises.
Six field trips — to places such as the library, the nature center, and the beach.
Garden work yielding 40 squash, 90 stems of lavender, and 12 tomatoes.
849 healthy breakfasts and 1698 snacks served.
58 round-trip bus rides to and from school and to various destinations, including the YMCA of Greenwich for pool time and swimming lessons.
Best of all, there was 98% attendance — a true testament to the success of the inaugural summer session of Horizons at Brunswick.
“We are grateful for the support and partnership with the Greenwich Public Schools,” said Marianne Ho Barnum, Executive Director of Horizons at Brunswick. “We also owe our gratitude to the YMCA of Greenwich, the YWCA of Greenwich for extended care for working parents, and Coca-Cola for providing juice and water.
“And, of course, to Brunswick School for many in-kind gifts, use of facilities, coordination, support, and guidance. It was a great first summer of Horizons.”
