Bruins Outlast Vikings in Baseball Battle

The Brunswick varsity baseball team battled to a tightly contested 3-2 victory on Thursday against a talented King team.  

It was a back-and-forth game, as both teams refused to give an inch to the opposition. It came down to solid pitching, tight defense, and timely hitting for the Bruins, as they were able to pull ahead in the seventh inning.

Reed Hyde got the start on the mound and was solid for two and two thirds innings. Teddy Bancroft came into a tight situation in the third and was able to hold the Vikings offense from (what could have been) a big inning. Ty Ostrwoski came in for the fourth and fifth innings and was excellent for both. Jerry Guzman came in for the Bruins in the sixth and seventh inning and shut the door to earn the save. 

There was not a lot of fire power from the offensive side of the game, although timely hitting was key to the Bruins victory. Connor Jones paved the way for the initial runs of the contest, as he doubled to right field with two outs in the 3rd. Wim Nook singled to bring across the first run for the Bruins. The King offense tied it up in the bottom half of the inning.  

In the sixth inning, Carlo Tucci tripled to right, bringing across Alex Giannuzzi, who singled earlier in the inning. This made the score 2-1, Brunswick. But the Vikings did not give in. King manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth by the way of stealing home in a two-out situation.  

With the game now tied at two, the Bruins knew they needed to get a run across in order to give themselves a chance to win – and they did just that. Jones earned himself a walk to get himself aboard in the seventh. He then stole second, putting himself in scoring position. With two outs, Michael Yeager stepped into the box and hit a screaming line drive down the left field line for a double. This brought Jones around to score and gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead, and a chance to pull away with the win. Guzman shut the door on the Vikings offense in what was their last chance at the plate.  

It was an extremely well-played game for both teams, as each side battled until the very end. For Brunswick, this victory marks their fourth league victory in a row (5-1 record in league and 7-1 overall). 

The Bruins look to continue their momentum as they hit the road on Monday to face off against Cheshire Academy. Jackson Shepelsky will get the start.
