Bruins Stay Unbeaten, Defeat Darien High School

Defeated by Darien by one goal in 2023, Brunswick’s lacrosse team left nothing to chance when the rivals squared off Thursday night.

Setting the tone from the start, the Bruins built a four-goal, first-quarter lead, an advantage they maintained throughout, and remained undefeated with their fourth straight victory to begin the season.

Senior captain Hudson Hausmann scored a game-high four goals, sophomore Lucas Garcia recorded a hat trick and senior Payton Anderson tallied twice with two assists to power Brunswick past host Darien, 12-6.

In Thursday’s much-anticipated matchup between the Bruins and Blue Wave, ‘Wick led 4-2 following the first quarter and were ahead 7-3 at halftime.

Senior goalie/captain Tucker Williams made seven saves for Brunswick, which entered the game ranked No. 4 in the USA Lacrosse High School Boys Top 25 Rankings. The Bruins are also ranked No. 7 in the Inside Lacrosse Magazine's National poll.

Thursday's game was originally scheduled to be held at Brunswick School's Cosby Field, but Wednesday's storm, which included heavy rain and wind resulted in damage being done to Brunswick's field, with a light fixture falling to the field.

"It was nice to lead from the start," Brunswick coach David Bruce said. "The last few years here, we had to come from behind and it didn't always go our way."

Last season saw Darien defeat ‘Wick, 12-11, scoring the game-winning goal with 1.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Brunswick beat Darien in 2022, 11-10, and won in 2021 in overtime, 9-8. The Bruins were also victorious against the Blue Wave in 2019, 11-9, so they lead the series, 4-1.

"Our defense played great,” Bruce said. “We told them, we don’t need to take the ball away, we need to sit down and keep them on the perimeter. They did a great job and Tucker came up with some awesome saves.”

Brunswick is right back in action Saturday against Loomis Chaffee School at 2 p.m. in Greenwich.
