Bruins Take Title at Belmont Hill-Nichols Tournament
Brunswick took the title at the Belmont Hill-Nichols Holiday Tournament — the program’s fourth championship since joining the event in 2012 — with a 5-4 victory against Gilmour Academy in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in Belmont, Mass.
The teams had played 45 minutes of regulation, five minutes of a scoreless first overtime at five on five, and nearly 12 minutes of the second session at four on four before senior defenseman Carter Hall emptied the benches with a laser of shot from the slot to the top corner. What a time for the first goal of his three-year varsity career.
Things looked a little bleak for the Bruins after Gilmour (Gates Mills, Ohio) tallied its fourth of the contest with 12 minutes to play — but ’Wick rallied with two before the buzzer to tie it up. The equalizer came off the stick of senior d-man Luc Lampert, who snuck down from the point and buried a one-timer on a feed from below the goal line by junior Oliver Czaja with 2:02 left.
Brunswick trailed 2-1 after one and 3-2 after two.
Senior Will Baker, who made 35 saves, stopped a breakaway in double overtime, as well as a number of other Grade-A chances by the Lancers on a 4v3 power play to help his team earn the title.
With the win, the Bruins move to 9-1-2 on the season. Remarkably, since January 28 of last year, the team’s record is 19-2-2.
Up next is a two-game set with Upper Canada College on Friday and Saturday of next week at (wait for it…) Hartong Rink.
