Bruins Capture Mutch Cup Hockey Tournament

Brunswick captured the Kevin Mutch Hockey Tournament with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the hosts from St. Sebastian's on Sunday afternoon in Needham, Mass.

The visitors came out flying and playing with a purpose in the first half of action, ultimately racing out to a 3-0 lead after just eight minutes on two goals from senior Brendan Giles and one in between from senior Charlie Vincent. The third goal, in particular, was worthy of note, as all five Bruins (Jack McCullough, Sean Gibbons, Luke Drury, Cooper Cleaves, and Giles) touched the puck in the offensive zone before the tally. 

The Arrows swung a little of the momentum back to their side on a 5 v 3 PPG after consecutive penalties late in the period put the Bruins down for a full minute and 53 seconds – 3-1 after 22:30. 

The second saw more of the same, as Brunswick couldn't stay out of the box and couldn't draw any penalties of their own (much to their chagrin). Seb's climbed to within one with 5:38 to go as the Bruins tried to kill off a major kneeing penalty. 

The refs evened things up at the 4:18 mark and the teams played 4v4 for two minutes before the Arrows pulled their goalie and made a final push. 

On a scrum in front, the whistle blew and Seb's hands went into the air but the official declared a penalty shot, as a Brunswick defender had kept the puck out of the net with his hand. 

Senior goalie Will Baker, who was again phenomenal in between the pipes, stood tall and stopped Seb's best player on the attempt – still a minute to play. 

The Bruins didn't allow anything more toward the net and killed off the final seconds to claim their second tournament title in a row.

After losing its opening game of the season – and not having played one on Hartong ice – Brunswick has been unbeaten in its last seven games to go into a little break with a 5-1-2 record.
