Bruins Fall at Choate

The Brunswick soccer team dropped to 1-1 on the young season following a 6-1 loss at Choate on Wednesday.

The hosts got on the board early, with their striker beating senior goalkeeper Phil Stabinsky high on a 1-v-1 in the second minute. Choate scored another goal in the 21st, and then again in the 29th (on a penalty kick), at which point the match was halted due to a rain delay.

After an hour off the pitch, the teams returned to play with Choate scoring once more just before halftime.

Credit the Bruins with a better showing in the second half. After letting up a fifth goal in the 54th minute, an attitude and slight personnel change improved the quality of play defensively and through the midfield.

In the 83rd minute, senior striker Ben Matitia collected a pass from midfield and knocked it down the right sideline for Fernando Uyaguari. The sophomore midfielder took a touch toward the endline and then laid it off in front of the net for senior Luke James, who confidently deposited the ball in the back of the net.

The hosts had the final tally of the match in the 87th minute.

Stabinski and sophomore Josh Katz split duties in net and both were tested. Stabinsky made four saves, and Katz had seven in his varsity debut.

The season continues Saturday at Taft, as Brunswick be the first visiting team to play under the lights of the Rhinos’ new turf pitch. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
