Eight Seniors 'Merit' National Recognition

Eight Brunswick seniors were announced on Wednesday, Sept. 13, as semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, joining 16,000 students nationwide.

The group of semifinalists — Ajay Bagaria, Luke Dougherty, Thomas Ewald, Gabriel Lopez, Robert MacNaughton, Kiran Marsh, William Newton, and Andrew Tu — were selected for their outstanding academic record and for their superior performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

All semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,140 National Merit Scholarships, worth nearly $28 million and to be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level.

“These boys are not only accomplished in their academic endeavors but also in their extracurricular pursuits,” Head of School Thomas W. Philip said.

“They follow their passions in and out of the classroom with dedication, intelligence, and curiosity — and we are proud that they are representing Brunswick on a national level, as their fine character matches their academic prowess.”
