Squash Sends Pair to British Junior Open

Dana Santry ’20 and Tad Carney ’22 took part in the 2017 British Junior Open Squash Championships, competing against as many as 64 players in their respective age groups. Santry finished eighth in the U-15 division, while Carney finished 16th in the U-13 group.

The oldest and most respected tournament in squash, the five-day British Junior Open is considered by many as the top junior tournament in the world. Each participant was scheduled to play in two matches on day one, followed by single matches over the next four days. Final rankings were determined after the last day of competition.

Santry, the third-ranked player American in his age group heading into the British Open, was seeded 27th for the U-15 tournament. Following two straight wins, Santry had a setback in the round of 16. Santry bounced back with a four-game victory over the second-ranked player in his age group. The Brunswick ninth-grader finished the British Open in eighth place with a 3-3 record against a field of 64 international players.

In the U-13 age group, Carney, the top-ranked American, finished the tournament in 16th position, ahead of 36 other players in the 52-person field. Carney, a seventh-grader at Brunswick, finished the six matches with a similar 3-3 record.
