Big Third Period Propels Hockey to Season-Opening Win
Brunswick broke open a scoreless game in the third period, notching a trio of goals en route to a 3-0 win in the season-opener against Kent (1-2-0) at Hartong Rink on Wednesday.
After two scoreless periods, the Bruins (1-0) finally broke through 100 seconds into the third period on a power-play goal by Christian LeSueur. The co-captain went coast to coast on the man-up advantage, slicing through a pair of defenders before netting the low glove-side tally.
LeSueur made it a 2-0 game for the Bruins at the 6:30 mark, finishing off a pass from Nick Boardman moments after Brunswick killed off a penalty. LeSueur collected the pass just outside the Brunswick blue line and raced up the left side, slicing across the crease to beat the Kent keeper.
The Bruins iced the game in the final minute on an empty-net goal by Charles Shaffer for the 3-0 final.
Strauss Mann had an impressive season debut in goal for the Bruins, turning away 33 shots for the shut-out victory.
The two teams combined for 15 penalties, seven for the Bruins, as both squads had several extra-man opportunities during the contest.
