Wrestling Preview: Experience is Key

Heading into the 2016-17 wrestling season, the Bruins return an experienced group of grapplers for long time head coach Tim Ostrye.

Ostrye, one of the most decorated coaches in any sport, is entering his 31st year of pacing the mats inside the wrestling room that bears his name. Over the years, Ostrye has seen his teams win 19-straight FAA titles, and 32 out of its last 33 league championships.

Last season, Brunswick (21-0) marched unscathed through the FAA and non-conference schedule and reached its team goal of a Western New England Championship (WNEISWA). It was the third-straight title for the Bruins and 12th overall for Ostrye.

At the New England Championships last season, Brunswick took third place, its highest finish in over 10 years. With the strong finish, the Bruins sent six wrestlers to the prep national championship.

A core group of veterans will lead the Bruins this year, led by the captains: seniors Andrew Hennessy (31-5), Brooks Hennessy (27-8) and junior Lachlan Rosato (25-10). The trio combined for 83 wins last season, as each garnered several podium finishes in tournaments and qualified for nationals.

Adding to the varsity depth is Alex Burdick (19-8), an eighth grader on varsity last season, along with juniors John DeLucia (21-11), Jack Ocken (14-4), and Aiden Reynolds (19-6). A pair of very experienced seniors, Emmett Bell (15-12) and Alex Tucker (21-12), round out a group of 10 veterans returning for Ostrye.

While the hard work began before the Thanksgiving Day recess for the Bruins, their first attempt for competitive success comes in just a few days, as the team heads to Hopkins for an invitational tournament on Saturday, December 3.

The first home match at the Ostrye Wrestling Room, inside Burke Field House, is against Avon Old Farms on Wednesday, December 16, at 3:30 p.m.

For the Brunswick community, all home wrestling matches, including the Brunswick Invitational Tournament on January 21, will be covered live and on-demand with access to a ‘Wick Live account.
