Bruins Top Bears at Berkshire

Brunswick finally earned a victory in Berkshire’s Olympic rink — having come up empty in four previous tries dating back to 2016 — and secured a 5-3 win on Saturday afternoon in Sheffield, Mass.

The Bears opened the scoring in the first period and it appeared things were heading toward the classic low-scoring affair on the big sheet — but the Bruins broke through with just 33 seconds to go in the frame on another goal by senior co-captain Sean Gibbons to tie the contest before the intermission.

In the second, the visitors added two more on back-to-back shifts — from senior co-captain Luke Drury and Gibbons — to jump out in front by two. The home team did answer, though, with one of its own before a phenomenal individual effort from senior D-man and Dartmouth commit Cooper Cleaves staked the visitors to a 4-2 lead after two. (The Big Green assistant coach in attendance must have enjoyed the highlight-reel tally.)

Junior Tucker Spiess tipped home an insurance marker in the third before Berkshire capped the scoring in the game’s final minute.

It was a solid weekend of hockey for the Bruins (22-5-2), as they picked up two key league wins in advance of Wednesday night’s big tilt against Salisbury. Puck-drop is set for 5 p.m. at Hartong.
