Berkshire Bests Bruins

Brunswick lost 2-1 to Berkshire on Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought match on Carroll Field. This was an impressive showing by the team, going up against a perennial prep-school powerhouse and regular NEPSAC tournament team.

The visitors snuck a goal past senior GK Phil Stabinsky just before the half-time whistle, depositing a rebound after Stabinsky made the original save diving to his right. By all accounts, Stabinsky and 'WIck's defensive line kept the team in this match through the first 45 minutes, with Stabinsky making seven saves before handing off duties to his sophomore counterpart Josh Katz.

The Bruins committed to their style of soccer, building through the midfield and playing out to their wings to try and generate chances on goal. In the 66th minute, this paid off, when senior Luke James earned a corner kick: junior midfielder Agustine Grether sent the set piece just past the goal, which was converted into a tally off the head of freshman defender Justo Iraola to make it 1-1.

Katz was under similar duress to Stabinsky in the second frame. A scary moment in the 66th minute when Katz came out strong for a through-ball outside the box and was fouled hard by a Berkshire striker on a dangerous and careless challenge. The tackle resulted in a yellow-card, and Stabinsky had to return to his spot between the posts.

The stoppage in play shifted momentum back to the visitors, who were able to sneak in a goal in the 71st minute.

The Bruins fought until the final whistle, generating a number of chances on goal in the final minutes. The entire roster top-to-bottom played hugely impactful minutes. Some shouts are due to wingers Henry Wise '26 and Shep McGovern '27, who played their best games of the season, in addition to defenders Charlie Perkins '26, Sebi Medina '27 and Whim Nook '27.

Two weeks left in the season, with two road matches this week at Millbrook on Wednesday and Frederick Gunn on Friday.
