Brunswick led Deerfield late in the fourth quarter, but the visiting Big Green scored on a one-yard touchdown rush in the closing seconds to take a 20-17 lead and stun the Bruins on Saturday night in front of a packed house on Cosby Field.
The scoring started with a 10-yard Bryce Davis run and a 32-yard field goal from Oliver Reynolds, putting the Bruins out to an early 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The score stood at 10-7 at halftime.
Deerfield scored a go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run in the third quarter and led 14-10. Brunswick retook the lead in the fourth, 17-13, thanks to a 17-yard touchdown run by senior Bryce Davis with 2:26 to play.
The ensuing kickoff was downed at the Deerfield three-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Deerfield completed a 72-yard pass to the Brunswick 25. The Big Green capped off the drive with a one-yard run with 16.3 seconds remaining in the game. The ensuing point after touchdown attempt was blocked and recovered by junior Ethan Long.
Deerfield also scored after time had expired — setting the final score at 26-17 — by picking up a fumble during the Bruins’ last play of the game, which resulted in multiple laterals to try to take back the lead.
The loss was Brunswick's (1-2) second this season, while the Big Green improved to 3-0. The Bruins will travel to Avon to take on the Winged Beavers of Avon Old Farms next Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
