Mind Over Matter: ’Wick Students Earn World ‘Odyssey’
Two Brunswick Middle School teams qualified for the world finals after top-notch performances at the Odyssey of the Mind state finals, held last weekend in Bristol, Conn.
’Wick’s fifth-grade team — including Harry Bonomo, Andrew Donovan, Dylan Kirsch, Christian Larkin, Henry Sorbaro, Nicholas Tchkotoua, and George Walker — won its division in the Stack Attack! Challenge, requiring teams to design, build, and test structures made of balsa wood and glue that balance and support as much weight as possible.
They were coached by Kristen Donovan P ’21, ’23.
The eighth-grade team — comprised of Nicholas Dow, Matty Goodman, Chris Ramos, Sam Schwartz, and David Swigart — placed second in the Something Fishy competition for its work in designing catching contraptions.
“I’m most proud of the demonstrated teamwork and commitment to success, as well as to each other, that both teams of boys showed,” said science teacher Sonia Schott, Brunswick’s eighth-grade coach.
“They struggled through challenges and trial-and-error failures during development of their original solution to the Odyssey challenges. It takes perseverance to solve these challenges and finish with these exceptional results.”
The Odyssey of the Mind world finals will be held at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, on May 25–28
