'Wick Fall Sports Preview

Water Polo

Pat Stefanou ’16, a two-time All-New England selection, will lead the water polo squad into the pool this fall. Last season’s MVP, Stefanou scored 69 goals to help his team reach the semi-final round of the New England Liquid Four in 2013.

He will be joined by a host of seniors — Matt Marvin, Julian Ronda, Alex Prout (All-New England, 2013), James Granruth, and Grant Pierce — all of whom will be expected to provide leadership, as well as offensive firepower and defensive stability.

Charlie Pang ’17, another All-New England pick from a year ago, will return in goal for the Bruins.

“The core of our group is back,” Head Coach Eric Tillman said. “We’ll be bigger and more experienced. Our focus will be on learning how to win in the post-season.”

The first-ever home game in the newly opened Brunswick Pool is Wednesday, September 10, when the Bruins face Staples High School.

Football

After earning a share of the Housatonic League Championship with Kent and Avon, and also playing for the NEPSAC title in 2013, the football team is ready to get back on the field this fall.

With many key players returning — including quad-captains Pat Adamo, Matt Gendell, Malik Wilder, and Billy O’Malley — the Bruins will look to ride the momentum of their 7-2 record from a year ago.

“We are returning a number of starters, and my expectation of the team is to compete the way I know we can,” Head Coach Jarrett Shine said. “We are not making any guarantees. I just expect the boys to give me their best every play.”

Game action begins on September 20 — when Brunswick travels to Avon Old Farms.

Cross Country

The cross country team capped off its 2013 season with an FAA tournament championship and an eighth-place finish at the New England meet.

As the Bruins gear up for 2014 — led by senior tri-captains and experienced runners Parker Stitzer, Will Berczuk, and Cooper Robinson — they expect to race even faster and more competitively than a year ago.

“If we can stay healthy, we should have a chance to rival our best-ever teams,” Head Coach Steve Polikoff said. “For the first time, the program returns three former All-New England runners in Berczuk, Stitzer, and Christian Tanner ’15.”

Senior George Goodfriend; juniors Andrew Israel, Will Jeffery and Chris Peisch; and sophomores Brooks Hennessy and Keshav Raghavan will give the team significant depth.

Bruin runners will start the season with an FAA meet, hosted by Greens Farms Academy, on September 17.

Soccer

With a solid core of upperclassmen — including WNEPSSA all-star and senior co-captain Sal Lopez — the soccer team has visions of a winning season ahead.

Senior co-captain Marshall Dickson also returns to the lineup and will solidify the midfield for the Bruins.

“We have ten lettermen coming back, which should give us the necessary experience to have success in this league,” Head Coach Power Fraser said. “It’s always a tough schedule, but we’re confident that we’ll have a chance to win every game.”

League play gets underway on Saturday, September 13, when the Bruins host Taft.
