Water Polo Takes Second Place in Cardinal Tourney

After dispatching three teams to reach the finals of the two-day Cardinal Tournament, Brunswick lost to the host school Greenwich High School in the championship match on Saturday night, 5-4. It was the first setback of the season for the Bruins (13-1).

 

In the title match, Will Marvin scored first for the Bruins 90 seconds into the game, as Greenwich answered with the equalizer a minute later.

 

In the second quarter, Thacher Scannell’s goal within the opening minute gave the Bruins a 2-1 advantage.

 

A pair of Cardinal tallies closed out the first half, as Greenwich took a 3-2 lead at the break.

 

In the third quarter, neither team could muster a goal during some extra-man opportunities. However, Brunswick’s Keegan Drew broke the scoring drought on a man-up tally at 1:05, tying the game at three goals apiece.

 

Following a Cardinal goal to open the fourth quarter, Brunswick’s Simon Derby tied the game at four with 5:30 left to play.

 

Just 15 seconds later, Greenwich scored the eventual game-winner, for the 5-4 final.

 

Brunswick goalie Charlie Pang made eight saves.

Recapping the two-day, 10-team tournament, Brunswick topped Greenwich High School’s B team, 12-5, in the opening round on Friday. The Bruins advanced to the Saturday night championship after dispatching Mako Water Polo Club (15-7) and Chelsea Piers (11-3) in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, respectively.
