Four Baseball Players Earn MSGVarsity Honors, Trevor Johnson POY

Senior Trevor Johnson highlighted a quartet of Brunswick baseball players on MSGVarsity’s 2016 Connecticut Regional Baseball Team. Johnson was the Player of the Year on the all-star team, as classmate Michael Marzonie garnered first-team accolades. Sophomore Aaron Sabato and Connor Redahan ’16 earned second-team recognition.

The foursome led the Bruins to a terrific 20-2 record, including a 12-0 mark in FAA regular season play, en route to the second-straight FAA title for coach Johnny Montanez.

Johnson, headed to Dartmouth this fall, had a tremendous senior season as an outfielder, closer, and hitter. The centerfielder showed tremendous speed and range in the field, making challenging fielding plays look routine and throwing out a number of runners this year. The righty was also the Bruins’ closer, as the hard-throwing Johnson collected a team-high six saves. Johnson’s often overpowering fastball consistently hit the low 90’s, as he finished the year with an ERA of 0.568 in nine appearances.

From the batter’s box, Johnson led the team in home runs (4), runs batted in (25), batting average (.470), and slugging (.773). Of his team-leading 31 hits, 11 went for extra-bases.

Marzonie, the ace of the staff, started six games and finished with a 5-1 record. The future Boston College player led Brunswick in wins (5) and strikeouts (51). His array of pitches, including a strong fastball and a devastating curve, kept opposing hitters off balance. He finished the year with an impressive 1.00 ERA over a team-high 35 innings of work.

When Marzonie was not on the hill, he played third base and consistently batted clean-up this season. He tied Johnson for second on the team with doubles (6), while finishing second in runs batted in (19) and home runs (2).

Redahan made the second team as a utility player. The sure-handed shortstop is headed to Southern Connecticut to play next year. Redahan matched Johnson with a team-high 31 hits, while scoring a team-high 24 runs. He was a tough out at the plate, striking out a team-low five times (minimum 25 at-bats) and finishing with a .419 batting average. Redahan added two home runs and five doubles, while collecting 14 RBI.

Sophomore Aaron Sabato was the designated hitter for MSGVarsity’s second team. The Brunswick second baseman led the team in doubles (7) and on-base percentage (.618). He added a team-high in walks (21) and was second to Johnson in batting average (.462) and slugging (.712).  Sabato finished with 24 hits, including a pair of home runs, 18 RBI, and scored 17 runs.
