Spring Varsity Awards Announced

After a successful spring season of athletics, Brunswick varsity coaches presented a number of team and conference awards at the spring sports banquet at the Upper School.
 
The tennis team, led by head coach Ryan Abraham and assistant Brian Shepard, finished with a 9-2 overall record. The Bruins won the FAA regular season title, as junior Tyler Carney and Ryan Glanville ’20 won the FAA Doubles title.

In total, five Bruins won All-FAA accolades. Carney, seniors Conner Wakeman and Johnny Rose, and sophomore Willie Turchetta were all-league selections, while freshman Ben Powis earned All-FAA honorable mention recognition. Within the team, Powis won the Sportsmanship Award, while Rose earned the Hartch Family Award as the senior with great work ethic and character.
 
The 15-3 lacrosse team, coached by David Bruce and his assistants Rob Follansbee, Brendan Gilsenan, and Paul Scheufele, finished second in the 13-team New England West 1 league.

Five players earned all-league honors, including senior Reilly Walsh, who was named an Under Armour All-American. Joining Walsh on the all-league team are juniors Alex Buckanavage, Sean Morris, and John Fox, along with senior Jack Stephenson. Team awards went to Fox (Durkin: Team MVP), senior Ryan Stafford (Altman: non-starter MVP), senior David Pasini (Harris: Most Improved Player), Walsh (Most Valuable: Offense), and Stephenson (Most Valuable: Defense).

The Bruins finished the season ranked #20 in the final USA Today Super 25 Poll, with the three setbacks to teams ranked above them in the poll.
 
Track coaches Robert Taylor and Dwight Jackson recognized junior Brandon Allen as the team’s MVP. Allen set a school record in the 100-meter dash and placed third in the New England Division II Championship in the long jump.
 
After a 15th-place finish in the national fleet championship, coaches Andrew Scrivan and Oliver Bierman-Lytle recognized three members of the sailing team. Junior Jack Parkin was named MVP for the second year, while classmate Bay Hodge earned the Top Crew Award. Will George collected the Most Versatile Sailor Award as the freshman excelled as both a skipper and as crew.
 
The golf team, led by head coach Anthony Fischetti and his assistants Sunil Gupta and Jim Stephens, finished 2016 with an impressive 27-4-3 record. The team placed third in the 12-team Western New England Prep Tourney to cap the season.

A pair of senior co-captains earned the two team awards. John Hughes was recognized with the Coaches' Award for his leadership and play, while Eric Ganshaw was honored with the Doc Bevacqua Award as the best senior golfer.
 
Head crew coach Joe Falco and his assistants John Martin and Kathleen Myer handed out three awards to two seniors on the Brunswick School Boat Club. Will Powers earned the Coach’s Cup, while Andreas Kern capped his career with the Most Improved Oarsman and Physical Fitness Challenge Award.

Baseball head coach Johnny Montanez, along with assistants Tim Daly, Joe Early, Mike Hannigan, and Tom Murray, guided the Bruins to an FAA title, their second in a row. The team swept all 12 FAA regular season games en route to an impressive 20-2 record.

MSGVarsity.com ranked the Bruins #1 in Connecticut and #6 in the tri-state regional poll. The two losses were to teams ranked in the top five in the same poll.

Seven Bruins earned All-FAA accolades, as seniors Michael Marzonie, Wilson Salomon, Connor Redahan, Trevor Johnson, and Teddy Sabato joined sophomore Aaron Sabato on the first team, while junior Ryan Hanrahan earned honorable mention.

With the team awards, Johnson added the Dutch King Award, Marzonie collected the Cy Young Award, and Hanrahan earned the Coaches' Award.
