Brunswick’s tandem of Tyler Carney and Ryan Glanville won the FAA doubles championship at Hopkins on Monday, May 16. In addition to doubles action, the FAA hosted singles competition, where Willie Turchetta placed third for the Bruins.
The eight FAA schools sent two competitors for both singles and doubles play in the single elimination, 16-contestant tournament. All rounds before the championship were played as a single eight-game pro set, while the championship was played as a traditional best-of-three set match.
In doubles action, Carney and Glanville sped through the first two rounds, topping #16 St. Luke’s (8-2) and #12 Hopkins (8-1). In the semifinals, the duo outlasted #12 Hopkins (8-5), before winning the championship over #3 Rye CDS (6-4, 7-5).
Brunswick’s other doubles selection, Hayden Hoover and Clark Davis, the #10 seed, lost in the opening round to the eventual second-place team from Rye CDS (8-5).
In singles, Turchetta, the #3 seed, won his opening match over #14 Masters (8-2) and his quarterfinal contest against #6 King (8-2), before bowing out in the semifinals against the #2 seed from Hopkins (8-4).
Ben Powis, the #12 seed for Brunswick, surprised the tournament viewers with his upset win over #5 Rye CDS in the opening round. In the quarterfinal round, Powis ended his run against the #4 seed from Masters (8-4).
The tennis team will wrap-up the season at the New England Championships on May 21 at a site yet to be determined.
