Sailing Takes 15th in National Championship

Brunswick finished 15th in the 2016 Mallory Cup, the national high school sailing fleet championship. The two-day event, running from May 14-15, was hosted by the College of Charleston. Twenty teams, including many with Olympic hopefuls, competed in varying winds and currents.

Clear Falls H.S. (Texas) won the event, posting a score of 203 points, 38 points better than second-place Point Loma H.S. (Calif.). The Bruins, sailing in their second-straight Mallory Cup, finished with 499 points.

On Saturday’s opening day, a strong westerly breeze from 8-15 knots provided plenty of wind to launch 14 of the scheduled 20 races for both A and B divisions. There was a significant current flowing out of the river, and much variation in depth of the water, which made the first day a challenge for the sailors to read the wind across the water and the direction of the pressure.

Sunday’s wind for the final six races started at 10 knots from the north and slowly decreased during the day.

Jack Parkin skippered Brunswick in the A division, as Bay Hodge and Rhett Ullmann alternated as crew based on the wind strength. Henry Harris and Peter Schneider alternated skipper roles in the B division for the Bruins, as Will George crewed for most of the event. During some of the stronger wind, Harris skippered with Schneider as the crew.

The boats each school used for the championship were 420’s and FJ’s. The A division competed in 420’s for the first 10 races and the B division used FJ’s. The divisions switched boat classes for the final 10 races.

Parkin collected a number of strong starts in the A division, battling 19 other boats, including some with sailors drawing on U.S. Olympic-level training experience.

Throughout the weekend, Parkin had several third-place finishes and a second-place finish in one of the final races. Overall, Parkin finished ninth in the A division.

In the B division, Harris and Schneider collected a pair of top 10 finishes, sailing well in the upwind segments of the course.
