Six Bruins Awarded NCAA National Letters of Intent

In recognition of their athletic prowess, six senior Brunswick student-athletes who are prepared to sign National Letters of Intent (NLI) gathered at the Lower School for a small ceremony on Tuesday.

Four baseball players — including Connor Redahan, Michael Marzonie, Teddy Sabato, and Ryan Popp, along with a pair of lacrosse players, Jack Stephenson and Ryan Stafford — each received NLI’s from either an NCAA Division I or Division II institution.

By signing the agreement, student-athletes agree to attend the four-year school in return for athletic aid to continue their athletic careers at that specific college or university.

After a memorable 18-2 season on the diamond, a number of colleges sought out these four Bruins. Redahan, a versatile utility player, decided on Southern Connecticut State after hitting .354 last spring.

Marzonie heads to Boston College after an impressive junior campaign on the mound and in the batter’s box. Marzonie led the Bruins with five home runs in 45 at-bats, slugging an eye-popping .867, while collecting 20 hits, including eight for extra-bases for a .444 batting average. On the mound he was 3-0 with a miniscule 0.467 ERA, striking out 35 batters in 30 innings.

Sabato, who decided on the University of North Carolina, hit .404 from the plate in 2015, and was second on the team in singles (16). The strong-armed right fielder is also a top pitching prospect.

Popp, a Villanova University signee, was 4-0 on the mound for the Bruins. Over 33.2 innings, he struck out 45 batters, while holding a 1.87 ERA.

On the lacrosse side, Stephenson and Stafford have been members of the varsity team since their freshman years. The pair helped the Bruins win the New England West I crown in 2014, with a 14-4 record.

Stephenson, a starting goalie for Brunswick, chose Georgetown University, while Stafford selected the University of Vermont. Stafford will be joining his brother Cam ’14 on the Catamounts, along with three other former Bruins.
